What is a digital detox?

A digital detox is a deliberate decision to cut back on optional screen time. Not an all-or-nothing quit, just a conscious step back.

Most screen use is not the problem. Video calls with family, research, work tools, and accessibility apps are all valuable. What tends to cause trouble is the habitual, passive kind: opening Instagram for no reason, watching one more episode after you already planned to stop, or picking up your phone out of boredom and losing 40 minutes.

A detox plan targets that optional recreational use. By setting a specific target and following a gradual reduction schedule, you give yourself time to adjust, build alternative habits, and reach a sustainable balance rather than crashing and reverting.

This tool does not diagnose anything, and it does not require you to quit technology. It helps you set a goal and work toward it in a realistic, structured way.

How the calculator works

The formulas are straightforward. Here is exactly what each number means.

Daily reduction

The total gap between your current and target screen time, divided equally across your plan duration. Example: 3h to 1h over 14 days = 8.6 minutes less per day.

Plan total reclaimed

For gradual mode, this uses the triangular sum (you save a little more each day as you progress), so the total is roughly half of what a jump-to-target plan would save.

Annual projection

Daily reduction times 365, divided by 60. This assumes you maintain your target screen time after the plan ends. It is a projection, not a guarantee.

Books and walks

Opportunity-cost estimates using averages: 8 hours to read a book, 30 minutes per walk. These are rough equivalents to make the numbers more tangible.

Category trims

When category totals and a reduction goal are both present, suggested trims are calculated proportionally: each category contributes the same fraction of cuts as it takes of your total recreational time.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. Your plan is saved with localStorage if you click Save, and nothing is sent to a server. You can reset at any time.

Common questions

Straight answers about digital detox planning and how this tool works.

A digital detox is a deliberate reduction in optional recreational screen time. It does not mean quitting technology altogether. Most people find that a gradual, planned approach works far better than going cold turkey, which often leads to rebound use within a few days.
In gradual mode, your daily target drops by an equal increment each day (or week for longer plans) until you reach your goal. In immediate mode, you go straight to your target from day one. The schedule table shows you exactly what to aim for each day or week.
It depends on how much you want to reduce and how aggressive you want to be. A 7 to 14-day plan works well for building initial awareness and momentum. A 30 to 60-day plan gives habits more time to form. Research on habit formation suggests consistent behaviors take around 66 days on average to become automatic.
Recreational screen time is optional, leisure-driven use: social media, streaming, gaming, browsing, and similar habits. It does not include work, school, accessibility tools, healthcare apps, or essential communication. Only count the time you feel is genuinely optional.
For most people, gradual reduction is more sustainable. Cutting out habits completely and suddenly tends to produce strong urges and rebound use. Easing in slowly gives you time to build replacement activities, which is what makes the change last. That said, some people do better with an immediate switch. The tool gives you both options.
If you click the Save button, your plan details are saved in your browser using localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server. Your data stays on your device. Clearing browser history or cookies will remove the saved plan. You can also reset it manually at any time.
No. This is an educational planning tool that provides estimates based on the values you enter. It does not diagnose any condition, and the results are not medical advice. If you are concerned about your relationship with technology or screens, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
Books: annual reclaimed hours divided by 8 (average hours to read a book). Walks: annual reclaimed minutes divided by 30 (minutes per walk). Annual hours: daily reduction times 365, divided by 60. All of these are rough estimates and assume you maintain your target consistently after completing the plan.
